The other day I was invited to an outing with a group of people I knew, but I wouldn’t exactly have called them close friends. When the invitation first came up I hesitated a little. Sometimes it’s easier to stay home than to step into a social situation where you’re not quite sure how you fit.

But at the last minute I decided to go anyway.

I’m really glad I did.

What started as a simple gathering turned into one of the most fun evenings I’ve had in a while. We ended up playing a bunch of board games together, which quickly broke the ice and had everyone laughing. It’s funny how games can bring people together so easily. You start the night feeling a little unsure, and before long everyone is joking and competing like you’ve known each other for years.

Later in the evening someone brought out a guitar, and the whole atmosphere shifted into something even more relaxed. People started singing along to songs they knew, and the room filled with that kind of energy that only happens when everyone is comfortable enough to just enjoy the moment.

I got to borrow a tambourine and join in too, which made it even more fun. Sitting there making music with everyone felt simple in the best possible way. No big plans, no expectations, just people enjoying each other’s company.

By the end of the night I realized how grateful I was that I had decided to go. It reminded me that community doesn’t always start with deep friendships. Sometimes it starts with just showing up and being open to whatever the evening becomes.

In a funny way it also made me think of Gabe. He probably would have loved the whole vibe of the night. Singing together, playing instruments, people laughing and relaxing. Although if he had been there, he probably would have been the first to admit he can’t really sing.

Still, that almost would have made it better.

Sometimes the best memories come from the most spontaneous decisions. This felt like one of those nights that quietly reminds you how meaningful simple moments with other people can be.
